Learning to let things go may be one of the hardest actions you will take to set yourself free from the bondages of control. Trying to control others will also control you. Trying to change others will keep your own growth stuck. The best way to overcome the anger, suffering, and emotional roller coaster of trying to change others is to first identify the things you can control—you can control your perspective. You can control how you react when someone else disappoints you. You can control how you view life, people, and how the world works. Once you understand that everybody’s free will is respected by a divine law of individual sovereignty, you may begin exercising and applying your own free will. Once you begin accepting the other person as is, a new opportunity to change and improve yourself will open. Begin by illuminating the shadow of perfectionism so you may be set free of the bondage of your shadow’s control over you.
The good news is that perfectionism can be defeated through a broadening of your perspective of the human experience itself. Realize that no human is perfect, nor are we designed to be perfect. To take it a step further, the point of life isn’t perfection, but present perfect presence.
Learn how to set yourself free by integrating the perfectionist shadow with the present perfect presence of the good spirit. What is present perfect presence? It is the ability to stay in the moment and accept everything in that moment as is, the way it is, and being perfectly content, joyful, and serene knowing that things are exactly as they are right now. It takes a deeper level of trust in a Higher Power that things will manifest on its own timing according to Divine Timing, rather than your time. This deep level of trust in Divine Timing will help you stay in the moment of right now.
So how do you practice the art and craft of staying in the present? Paradoxically, you stay in the present by writing about the past. Ghosts will haunt until they are heard. Once heard, they are released and the present becomes more vivid, alive, and real for you. Expressive Writing is one of the most therapeutic self-help modalities of getting to the root cause of perfectionism. Once you know the truth, the truth will set you free.

Explore the Root Cause of Your Perfectionism Through a Mirror Darkly
“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.” — 1 Corinthians 13:12, KJV
Expressive Writing is an effective way to transform trauma into creative drama. When journaling online about our painful truths inside fiction, we can safely bring our “shadows” to light, or understand what triggers us on a deeper level. Sometimes, we need others to validate our experiences to feel less alone. And others need that in return. It’s a win-win situation.
